Located at the base of lower Manhattan, Battery Park is a beloved city park, peppered with monuments and fountains and replete with a harbor-side promenade.
Nearly 200 years ago the park served as a veritable depot for incoming immigrants, long before the Statue of Liberty gazed down on ships coming into port or Ellis Island fulfilled those functions. In fact, the official federal immigration bureau was located here until 1890.
Today, the public park is known in more temperate months for hosting outdoor concerts. Ferries dock here year-round, arriving from or departing to Staten Island and Ellis Island.
