Located just minutes by foot to either the Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est, the three-star Art Hotel Lafayette is convenient, trendy and sometimes affordable.
Pros: Newly renovated rooms. Cool contemporary design. Lots of amenities and free Wi-Fi. Near train stations.
Cons: Rates fluctuate wildly. Not close to many sights.
During a renovation a few years ago, the Art Hotel went for a “boutique” style, injecting its 27 rooms with that tell-tale smart style. We’re talking about recessed overhead lighting, décor that uses an earth-tone palette (lots of olives and purples going on), and an embrace of dark-stained woods.
All rooms, which vary in size from moderately spacious to a bit tight, are equipped with a flat-screen TV, telephone, free Wi-Fi and air conditioning (individually controlled). Rooms facing the street have double-paned windows, which is helpful for keeping out street noise, especially for lower floors. (We’d request a higher floor—don’t worry, there’s an elevator.)
We were impressed by the bathrooms, some of which are spacious (by Paris standards) and have large walk-in showers. All are equipped with a hair dryer, modern square sink and upscale toiletries.
The Art Hotel is located all the way up rue d’Hauteville at the Place Franz Liszt, which boasts a church and a traffic circle. It's picture-postcard cute.
More importantly, the area’s two important railroad stations (Gare du Nord and Gare de l’Est) are close by. This is certainly a convenient plus, and the hotel will be practical for those arriving late or leaving early. Otherwise, though, we’d probably opt for a hotel that's a bit more central.
A note on rates
Rates seem to fluctuate wildly at the Art Hotel d'Hauteville, depending on season and availability. We’d consider rates in the €90-100 range to be a good value. Its rates are often a bit too high for us to consider it an “Editor’s Pick,” but we’re still mentioning it, as it sometimes presents a good value.
Breakfast is served for a (not-so-cheapo) €10.
