We couldn't stop taking photos of the Ermitage Sacre Coeur, an elegant hilltop mansion-turned-guest house tucked into the shadow of the famous basilica in Montmartre.
Pros: Lovingly decorated rooms in an old mansion. Some rooms with amazing views over Paris. Family run and full of character.
Cons: Location can feel far-flung.
The Ermitage Sacre Coeur is a lovely family-run guest house perched high over Paris, right down the road from the Sacre Coeur Basilica. Each room in this carefully run establishment is lovingly appointed with antiques and pristine fabrics. It’s a dream for those looking for something romantic and removed.
The location itself, a five-minute stroll from the front steps of Sacre Coeur, could either be considered a showstopper or a dead end. On one hand, it puts you near the neighborhood’s countless restaurants, cafes and bars, while offering jaw-dropping views over Paris. As picturesque as this location may be, the hike won't be for everyone, and the sights of central Paris can feel quite a distance away.
As for the property, the Ermitage is a classy and family-run B&B with 12 lovingly appointed guest rooms located up a stunning staircase. Rooms are papered with English fabrics (not wallpaper, noted the very sweet proprietor), and furnished with handcrafted beds, armoires and tables dating from the early 1900s. Each room has a slightly different décor and color scheme, but all charm.
Otherwise, it's a simple place: No TV, no elevator, and no smoking. All rooms are equipped with standard tiled bathrooms (some with bathtubs), and free Wi-Fi is offered throughout.
The Ermitage's rooms either face the rather quiet rue Lamarck or face Paris. By "face Paris," we mean that, as the B&B is situated atop a hill, several rooms offer unobstructed views of the city (see photo—and ask ahead). Two ground-floor rooms open to the Ermitage's flower-filled garden.
Breakfast is included and is brought to your room.
Reserving at the Ermitage

The guesthouse is located about five minutes from the “Lamarck Caulaincourt” Metro station (line 12). When leaving the station, take the elevator to the rue Lamarck, and walk to the hotel (at 24, rue Lamarck) along the road toward Sacre Coeur.

About the Ermitage Sacre Coeur neighborhood
The wedding cake of a church that is the hilltop Sacré-Coeur basilica is this area’s most recognizable monument, and those who climb up will be rewarded with an incomparable view overlooking Paris. Montmartre's winding streets have inspired generations of starving artists and bohemians. That charm now co-exists with a theme park of the original village, centered on the Place du Tertre, complete with touristy restaurants and bars, and "artists" offering to sketch your portrait or sell you their lurid oil paintings.
