Eric and Sylvie Gaucheron run the charming and spiffy Familia Hotel with an astute eye for detail. Set near the base of the "rue des Ecoles," this two-star hotel has personality and perks galore.
The Familia's 30 rooms, 12 of which face the courtyard, are fresh, boasting tiled bathrooms, richly patterned bedspreads and lined curtains, exposed stonework, and perfectly sound-proofed windows. All of the rooms showcase original frescoes depicting various Parisian scenes, and beds and doors have been crafted especially for the hotel by woodworkers in Brittany. Not at all typical of two-star hotels!
Rooms on the first floor have real parquet wood floors, and the top floor rooms have exposed wooden beams and balcony views of Notre Dame's towers. In the hallways and down the stone staircase, oil paintings, photos, historical maps, and antique fabric tapestries remind you that Eric and Sylvie take pride in their hotel.
This hotel knows a thing or two about "familia." It was started by Eric's grandfather, continued by his parents, Bernard and Colette, and has been enthusiastically taken over by Eric and Sylvie. The couple has also bought and renovated the three-star
Hotel Minerve next door.
