Eric and Sylvie Gaucheron run the charming and spiffy Familia Hotel with an astute eye for detail. Set near the base of the Rue des Ecoles, this two-star hotel has personality and perks.
This hotel knows a thing or two about "familia." It was started by Eric's grandfather, continued by his parents, Bernard and Colette, and is now enthusiastically run over by Eric and Sylvie. The couple also runs the three-star
Hotel Minerve next door.
The Familia's 30 rooms, 12 of which face the courtyard, are pretty, boasting tiled bathrooms, richly patterned bedspreads and lined curtains, exposed stonework, and sound-proofed windows. 17 rooms face the street, several have balconies, and top floor rooms offer views of Notre Dame. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, free WiFi, and flat-screen TVs.
A couple of details, however, make your visit with this Familia memorable. For example, most rooms (21 of 30) showcases an original wall fresco depicting a Parisian scene. Furthermore, beds and doors have been crafted especially for the hotel by woodworkers in Brittany.
Rooms on the first floor have real parquet wood floors, and the top floor rooms have exposed wooden beams and balcony views of Notre Dame's towers. Oil paintings, photos, historical maps, and antique fabric tapestries dress up the hallways and staircases.
