Hotel des Bains

The Hotel des Bains is a spic-and-span operation, offering 42 lovingly appointed rooms just south of the Boulevard Montparnasse.

You’ll notice the hotel from the street: Flower boxes fill each street-facing window on its five floors. It’s a charming first impression, and happily, the interior doesn’t let you down.

Rooms

Rooms at the Hotel des Bains have been recently renovated, with freshly painted olive-and-cream walls, original artwork (the subject and style changes with each room) and bold drapes. Furnishings vary from wooden and wicker to modern and eclectic, and we were most intrigued by the beds with metallic backs that intersect as they climb tree-like toward the ceiling.

All rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV, telephone and safe. Rooms facing the street have double-paned windows to block out noise, although the rue Delambre isn’t terribly busy. Back rooms look out over a nice courtyard (not some tiny air shaft). Fifth-floor rooms have small balconies (ask when reserving).

Bathrooms are also renovated and in great condition, with marble and glass throughout. All are equipped with a shower (no tubs available), cosmetic mirror and hair dryer.

Hotel facilities

Downstairs, guests can relax in two different comfy salons, one off the street (with plush chairs and an old fireplace) and one in the back that also serves as a breakfast room. A continental breakfast buffet is offered for €9.50.

Note: The Hotel des Bains is equipped with an elevator. Wi-Fi is available for free in the lobby, although you’ll have to pay to use it in your room.

Location

The Hotel des Bains’ location places you within walking distance of several Metro stops, and most notably, two blocks from the Gare Montparnasse station. An artists’ market takes place half a block away each Sunday morning. Charming, anyone?

Value

So, we’re clearly gushing about the hotel, yet it isn't listed as an “Editor’s Pick.” Why not? It’s year-round price tag of €96 per room (single or double) is just a tad rich for our Cheapo blood. Yet, undoubtedly, it offers a splendid value for those willing to pay just a bit more.
