Far from knocking your socks off, the two-star Hotel du Nord et de l’Est offers a comfortable—and usually affordable—stay in Paris. An oasis of quiet considering its location near the bustling Place de la République, the hotel could be right for those looking for a budget-friendly home base.
Pros: Rates are usually affordable. Friendly staff. Proximity to a less touristy side of Paris. Quiet.
Cons: No frills. Can feel a bit far from big sights.
Standard and simple is the name of the game at the Hotel du Nord et de l’Est. The rooms may look and feel like those in any other hotel in France, but we’re not complaining. Dark wooden furnishings and cream-colored fabrics are far from titillating, but they get the job done.
All rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV and telephone, and free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel. A notable plus for two-star hotels in Paris: Most rooms also offer air conditioning. Cool!
Downstairs in the lobby, the hotel offers guests a Mac, in case you need to check your email. The open courtyard is also an intimate place to meet fellow travelers.
In all, we found the Hotel du Nord et de l’Est to usually be a pretty good deal, especially for those looking to sleep in a younger, trendier part of town.
Bathrooms are clean and simple, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. A standard hair dryer and no-frills toiletries are available and you may even be shocked (or not) to find a toilet next to the shower. How un-French!
Both bathtubs and showers are available, so be sure to specify your preference when reserving.
The Hotel du Nord et de l’Est’s location near the Place de la République will be ideal for those who are Metro-savvy. Prepare to use it to visit most major attractions.
The location is an ideal spot for nightlife, especially if you’re into the French hipster scene. It’s a healthy (and enjoyable) walk to the trendy Canal Saint Martin neighborhood, the bar-heavy rue Oberkampf, and the fashionable Upper Marais, featuring bakeries, cute cafés and couture.
Metro: Getting to the hotel from all major train stations and airports is pretty simple—just head to Place de la République.
From Charles De Gaulle and Orly Airports: The RER B train from either airport will stop at Gare du Nord, which connects to the Metro line 5; République is three stops away.

About the Hotel du Nord et de l'Est neighborhood
Situated at the intersection of the 3rd, 10th and 11th arrondissements, Place de la République is a bustling, sometimes manic, place. Cars whiz around the giant arched monument and tourists arrive (or transfer) from all directions. The area doesn't go out of its way to charm and certain parts can be sketchy at night. But the sheer number of low-priced hotels and easy train and pedestrian access make it an attractive and affordable option.
