Far from knocking your socks off, the two-star Hotel du Nord et de l’Est offers a comfortable—and usually affordable—stay in Paris. An oasis of quiet considering its location near the bustling Place de la République, the hotel could be right for those looking for a budget-friendly home base.
Pros: Rates are usually affordable. Friendly staff. Proximity to a less touristy side of Paris. Quiet.
Cons: No frills. Can feel a bit far from big sights.
Standard and simple is the name of the game at the Hotel du Nord et de l’Est boasting. All rooms are equipped with dark wooden furnishings and cream-colored fabrics, a flat-screen TV and telephone, and free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel. A notable plus for two-star hotels in Paris: Most rooms also offer air conditioning.
Bathrooms are clean and simple, with everything you need and nothing you don’t. A standard hair dryer, no-frills toiletries, and both bathtubs and showers are available, so be sure to specify your preference when reserving.
Downstairs in the lobby, the hotel offers guests a Mac, in case you need to check your email. The open courtyard is also an intimate place to meet fellow travelers.
The location is an ideal spot for nightlife, especially if you’re into the French hipster scene. It’s a healthy (and enjoyable) walk to the trendy Canal Saint Martin neighborhood, the bar-heavy rue Oberkampf, and the fashionable Upper Marais, featuring bakeries, cute cafés and couture.

About the Hotel du Nord et de l'Est neighborhood
The Bastille is located just east of the Marais in the 11th arrondissement, centered around the Place de la Bastille, once home to the infamous Bastille prison which was destroyed during the revolution (1789) and now anchored by a modern opera house that is the aesthetic opposite of the Opéra Garnier across town.
