Situated on the narrow, frenetic rue de la Huchette in the Latin Quarter, the two-star Hôtel Les Argonautes is quite the economical and artful eyeful! Quirky from top to bottom, the hotel is chock-full of eye-popping art, three-dimensional wall murals and an eclectic collection of flea market finds. Themes change frequently—these days, chickens are ruling the roost, so the coop’s quite full of hen tchotchkes.

The hotel’s 25 small rooms are outfitted with well-worn wooden desks, headboards and cabinets, along with wooden beams, frescoes and brightly colored linens. When it comes to amenities, this place is decidedly no-frills. Expect the basics—telephone and free Wi-Fi—and you’ll be happy.

Some rooms share toilets down the hall, though all rooms come with at least a private shower. Private baths are functional yet dated, and equipped with hair dryers.

The hotel is full of charm, but of the “shabby chic” sort. Those in need of a great deal of polish won’t find pleasure at this treasure! The location is bustling with lively bars and restaurants, the bells of Notre Dame and tourists—all eating, praying and loving till the wee hours of the morning—so light sleepers should ask ahead for a room in the back of the building or else pack ear plugs.

Breakfast costs €5. There’s an elevator, but it starts one flight up. The management and staff are warm and witty, and they know the Latin Quarter well.
