The two-star Hôtel Lyon-Mulhouse opened with a bang during the roaring Années Folles, and it still hasn’t lost its Jazz Age groove—or its panoramic views of Place de la Bastille. From this perch on the eastern border of the Marais, you can be among a string of lively bars and clubs faster than you can say “Lost Generation.”

The hotel’s 40 spacious rooms are adorned in rich reds and blues and flooded with natural light. They’re furnished with (very!) basic wooden headboards, desks and wardrobes and equipped with air conditioning, a telephone and flat-screen TV. Though the windows are double glazed, light sleepers should avoid booking one of the rooms facing the very lively Boulevard Beaumarchais. On the flip side, these rooms provide a prime people-watching spot.

The private bathrooms, also spacious, are sparkling with new fixtures and tiled walls.

Appealing to romantics and history buffs alike, the hallways here boast Parisian historical murals. Downstairs, the lobby (formerly the hotel coffee shop) and its breakfast room (formerly the restaurant) are modern and bright.

Breakfast is served for €8. Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel for a fee.

Note: The hotel will close temporarily for renovations during the fall of 2011, and open again in spring 2012.
