Talk about an Original option! Situated about a one-minute walk from the Place de la Bastille, the two-star Hotel Original Paris (formerly the budget-friendly Hotel Lyon-Mulhouse) has been completely renovated and reconceived as a boutique hotel.
Pros: Wild, boutique décor. High-end amenities. Cool Bastille location.
Cons: No longer “Cheapo friendly.” Rooms can be tight.
The aptly-named Hotel Original dishes up funky, fabulous rooms with rates that will now unfortunately be out of most Cheapo's reach.
The 38 rooms at the Original are just that, each conceived as its own art installation, with all the quirk and fancy of an adult version of “Alice in Wonderland.” Stella Cadente, the hotel’s designer, clearly had fun unleashing her creativity on each room.
Some rooms brood with dark colors, metallic glazes, and (faux) animal pelts. Meanwhile, others pop with bright splashes, gold walls (even in some bathrooms!), and no shortage of wild decorative surprises (yes, that’s a high heel on the wall).
Furnishings are rather deluxe. Fanciful beds, flat-screen TVs, iPod docking stations, designer books... all of these are great, although the extras do have a way of filling up the rooms. Double window panes keep most street racket out of the room. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning and free Wi-Fi.
Many of the bathrooms, however, are anything but cramped. Vanities glow (both because they’re clean and because they’re literally spotlit) and showers are glassy and spacious. The Original Hotel provides eco-friendly bath products, along with plush bathrobes.
Several rooms are equipped with gorgeous bathtubs. We should note, however, that these tubs are situated rather provocatively in the middle of the bedroom. (While this could be good for couples, it could be downright awkward among friends!)
Downstairs, the Original Hotel’s lobby, breakfast nook and bar are, unsurprisingly, sleek affairs, with moody blue hues, and lighting installations that spill forth glowing fiber-optic tentacles. Hang out for too long in the hotel’s well-stocked bar and you might just start thinking you’re at a club.
The hotel offers an organic breakfast for €12. The multilingual staff struck us as very friendly.
The hotel’s location, situated around the ever-spinning Place de la Bastille, is a fabulous place to call home. Home to a delightful food market on Sundays, the modern Opera house right on the square, and the trendy Marais district just a short walk away, there’s little to complain about in terms of location.
In all, the Hotel Original offers something unconventional and appealing to those able to shell out the euros. We’re always sorry, however, to see a budget hotel like the Lyon Mulhouse disappear. At least this one was replaced with something, well, Original.

About the Hôtel Original Paris neighborhood
The Bastille is located just east of the Marais in the 11th arrondissement, centered around the Place de la Bastille, once home to the infamous Bastille prison which was destroyed during the revolution (1789) and now anchored by a modern opera house that is the aesthetic opposite of the Opéra Garnier across town.
