Location, location, location! Not only is the Hotel Recamier steps away from both the Luxembourg gardens and the heart of St. Germain, it lies tucked into the corner of a tranquil, tree-filled square. And, there's one more thing: the Recamier is directly across the street from the mammoth St. Sulpice and adjoining Place St. Sulpice.
The lobby of the Recamier exudes elegance. Intricate, floral wallpaper climbs up from the mosaic tiled floor and across the ceiling. Antique furniture and a grandfather clock are accentuated by the tasteful paintings in the lobby and dining area. The hotel even has a small garden.
But there's a catch ... After the grand impression made by the hotel’s location and décor, we were rather surprised in the bedrooms. These 30 rooms lack the "French touch" so evident downstairs. In fact, the rooms lacked any touch at all. Gone were the antiques, floral wallpaper, and tasteful art work. Instead, boring, striped wallpaper and ho-hum bedding made for an underwhelming aesthetic. Bathrooms were tiled an unappealing shade of pink and artwork was m.i.a. in all the rooms we visited.
Although rooms might garner one or two stars, the excellent location and warm lobby ambiance make the Recamier a worthy choice.
