Housed in a former 17th-century convent on the narrow, lively rue Saint-Dominique, the radiant two-star Hôtel Saint Dominique offers cute, if splurge-worthy, rooms and one of our favorite views of the Eiffel Tower.

The hotel’s 37 rooms possess an airy Provençal countryside flair and are furnished with desks, wooden or iron headboards and green shutters. Faded vintage floral and Toile de Jouy wallpaper have got the walls covered. Rooms are not air conditioned, but are equipped with a fan, TV, telephone and minibar. Many street-side rooms offer panoramic views of the Eiffel Tower. Since these come with noise, especially from the popular Irish bar across the street, light sleepers might prefer a room on the quieter inner courtyard.

The bathrooms are private and immaculate.

City slicker alert: If you require a great deal of polish and shine in your two-star décor, the Saint Dominique is most likely not your soul mate. It stays true to its convent roots with modest, rustic furnishings and is best suited for those with a zeal for the historic and quaint. Also, beware that the convent’s age means floors are uneven in places.

Breakfast is available for €10 in the street-side lounge, but there are plenty of inexpensive bakeries in the neighborhood. Wi-Fi is available for free in the lobby or for a fee in guestrooms.

Note: The Saint Dominique will close temporarily for renovations during the summer 2011, and will reopen as a three-star hotel in spring 2012.
