Boasting a posh location literally across the street from the Luxembourg Gardens, the Résidence du Palais offers old fashioned rooms with shared facilities at low rates.
Pros: Directly across the street from the Luxembourg gardens. Clean.
Cons: Sparse furnishings. Only shared toilets available. Showers could be awkward.
First things first: The Residence du Palais is a “residence,” and not a hotel. Rooms are thus located in a residential building, floors creak like in an old flat, toilets are shared, and services are not necessarily what you’d find in a hotel. However, there’s a payoff: It’s got a million dollar location across the street from the Jardin du Luxembourg.
The guest rooms are well-kept, with freshly painted yellow or pink walls and restored crown moldings. Furnishings are sparse: All rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV and not much else. They either look onto the rue Vavin or overlook the courtyard (which would be quieter). As for facilities, each room has a sink and shower placed into a corner, mostly without a closing door. (This could prove to be awkward for a group of friends, or even a bashful couple.) Rooms on each floor share two toilets, which are cleaned throughout the day.
The big draw here (aside from the low rates) is the location. Walk downstairs, through the courtyard and cross the street directly into the Luxembourg Gardens. Aside from the garden, you’re also close to the Gare Montparnasse, cafés, shopping and several Metro stops.
The Résidence du Palais is run by the friendly Monsieur and Madame Vabre (who speak English). They’re assisted by the adorable Oscar (the Jack Russell), and Garfield and Felix (les chats). The animals stay put, however, in the second-floor reception.
The entire pension is non-smoking. The pension does have an elevator, and Wi-Fi is free and works throughout. Breakfast is available for €5.

About the Résidence du Palais neighborhood
Just west of the Latin Quarter in the direction of the Eiffel Tower, St. Germain des Prés is flanked by two Parisian gems—the Luxembourg Gardens to the south and the banks of the Seine to the north. The iconic neighborhood borrows its name from the church of St. Germain des Prés. It is defined by the boulevard of the same name, which slices through the quarter’s winding streets.
