You can't beat the Casa Per Ferie Santa Maria alle Fornace for proximity to Saint Peter's Basilica. (You can't beat that name either.) Charm isn't the right word for this place. However, clean, convenient, and cheap sum it up well, with double rooms running €100 all year long (a steal in high season).
This 18th-century monestary-turned-hotel has 54 rooms, a conference center, and a history for hospitality that dates back to 1198. (The order of the Trinitarian monks has specialized in humble, yet joyful hospitality for quite some time.)
Rooms are small and simple, with a dorm-like feel and rosy walls. However, considering a chance to stay almost in the Pope's back yard, most guests will forgive the sparse décor. Bathrooms are tiny but have all the essentials.
The simple breakfast room and library-lounge vaguely recall university facilities. Walls are bare save for the occasional crucifix.
