If you are interested in the ancient archaeological sites of the Colosseum, the Forum and the Palatine Hill, the three-star Hotel Nerva has one of the city’s most convenient locations. Tucked away down a cobblestone street, the hotel is surrounded by the remains of Rome’s original splendor. There’s a crumbling ruin around every corner, even if the views are obstructed by a magnificent ancient wall that runs parallel to the hotel.

The family-run Nerva has been completely renovated, though it retains some great original features of its old palazzo days. (Think intricate floors and brick and beamed ceilings.) The entrance hall is a testament to mock-empirical grandeur, with pseudo columns, frescoes, lamps and vases.

Rooms are comfortable and clean and will appeal to anyone who likes a little gilt with their peach paint. In addition to an attractive color scheme, expect air-conditioning, TV and a fridge.

There is a bar in the reception, along with a cozy seating area where free Wi-Fi is available. The Colosseum is a five-minute walk away. The Hotel Nerva is also close to the Metro, the historic center, the bus routes and the bohemian quarter of Monti.
