A budget hotel in its previous life, the Hotel Nerva was transformed in 2013 into the lovely "Nerva Boutique Hotel". Today it offers artfully designed rooms, many with direct views onto the ancient ruins across the street. Unfortunately, its cheapo rates are ancient history, as well.
Pros: Beautiful, renovated rooms. Great location near the Forum. Boutique hotel touches.
For history buffs looking for a hotel near the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine Hill, the three-star Nerva Boutique Hotel offers one of the most convenient locations in Rome. It’s tucked away down a cobblestoned street and surrounded by the ruins of Rome’s ancient splendor. Unfortunately, it's 2013 boutique transformation has made it one of the most expensive hotels in our guide.
Yes, this once-low key hotel has been turned into an undeniably swanky and stylish hotel. Room rates jumped predictably, with doubles now ranging from €100 to a whopping €280 a night. Because of this, we’ve removed the hotel from our “Editor’s Pick” list, but will keep the listing as it might come in handy for travelers with a bit more to spend.
The hotel’s 19 renovated guestrooms each boast their own trendy theme, with smartly coordinating colors, artwork and furnishing (guests can choose their flavor when booking). All offer air conditioning, a TV and minibar. Nine of the 19 rooms face the ruins (or an ancient wall) across the tiny Via Tor De Conti, and one top-floor room has wood-beamed ceilings in addition to ruinous views. Free Wi-Fi is avilable throughout the hotel.
All rooms have a newly renovated bathroom, each of which is equipped with a shower, hairdryer and toiletries.
Although the building that houses the hotel has been completely renovated, it retains some great original features from its palazzo days (including intricate floors and brick-and-beamed ceilings). Downstairs, the hotel's old bar area has been turned into a lovely cafe and bar that's a vision in white.
When it comes to location, the Nerva can’t be beat for lovers of history. There’s a crumbling ruin around every corner, even if some views are obstructed by a magnificent ancient wall that runs parallel to the hotel. The Colosseum is a five-minute walk away, and the Metro, historic center, bus routes and bohemian quarter of Monti are all nearby.
Breakfast is included in the room rate.
