The Hotel Pensione Papa Germano is a classic Cheapo hotel, offering newly renovated two-star and hostel-style rooms in a convenient spot near the train station.
Pros: Handy location for accessing the station. Inexpensive. Renovated rooms with AC.
Cons: Can get noisy. No elevator. Neighborhood a bit seedy.
Situated less than a 10 minute-walk from Termini station, the family-run Papa Germano makes a convenient and inexpensive home base for budget travelers. The hotel is located on two floors of an old palazzo (without an elevator), and offers rooms that are clean and comfortable.
The Papa Germano’s 20 rooms are either privates (sleeping one to four guests) with a private bath, or dorm-style rooms (sleeping three or four people) with a shared bath in the hall. Most, but not all of these rooms were renovated in 2014 and are in terrific shape (see photos).
Private rooms are neat and unfussy, with tiled floors, new cabinets, and matching curtains and bedspreads. All are equipped with a TV, telephone and AC. The private bathrooms are attractive and modern, all with a (decent-sized) shower and hairdryer. These rooms go for €50-90 for a double, making them some of the cheapest privates in our guide.
The dorms are straightforward: single beds lined up in a row, a sink, and air conditioning, a telephone and TV. The shared bathrooms are simple yet clean. (We’d take a shower in there.) These make a sensible alternative to spending the night in one of Rome’s larger hostels.
A breakfast buffet (with eggs, meats and cheeses) is sometimes included in the room rate (check when booking) and is otherwise available for an additional charge in the brightly lit lobby. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the Internet stations in the lobby are free for the first half hour with an additional charge thereafter.
Note that rooms are only accessible via the steep stairs (there is no elevator).
As is the case with neighborhoods surrounding most large transport hubs the world ‘round, the area around Termini isn’t particularly beautiful, but it’s not unsafe, and the Papa Germano is within easy reach of most of Rome’s hotspots. The city’s historic center (home to the Colosseum and Roman Forum) is about 10 minutes away via bus or metro, or 30 minutes on foot. You’ll also find bars, cafés and supermarkets (among several “adult” entertainment choices) nearby.

About the Hotel Pensione Papa Germano neighborhood
The largely residential area north of Stazione Centrale Termini is both convenient and affordable. Trains heading to Fumincino airport and across Italy depart from this massive station, the front of which is also a major bus and metro stop. Although not the most picturesque neighborhood in central Rome, lots of hotel competition can often mean good rates. The area is always crowded and sometimes a little seedy.
