If you're willing to shell out a little extra, then the three-star Hotel Smeraldo is a safe bet. In return for more euros, you get renovated, spotless rooms with modern amenities and a central location—two blocks east of the Campo de' Fiori.
The Smeraldo's 50 rooms are fresh with pleasing décor: fresh marble floors, cherry wood furniture, architectural prints, and coordinating peach drapes and bed spreads. All rooms are equipped with a desk and chair, TV, ample closet space and air-conditioning.
Soundproofed windows open mostly to the picturesque Vicolo dei Chiodaroli and the café and restaurant downstairs. (Eleven rooms open to the courtyard.) Soft-lit renovated baths are green and ivory, and sinks have enough room to rest your toiletries.
The Smeraldo's owners also run the smaller two-star
Hotel in Parione located around the corner. The pricier Smeraldo offers extra perks (an additional elevator, for instance), a roof terrace, and complimentary breakfast. Like the Parione, the word is out on the Smeraldo, so book months in advance.
