Packed with antiques and quiet, old fashion charm, the three-star Hotel Suisse is a worthy splurge, especially given its location one block from the top of the Spanish Steps.
Pros: Beautiful rooms. Spanish Steps location. Easy Metro connection.
Cons: Rates often too high for budget travelers.
The Hotel Suisse charmed us at once. From the top of the Spanish Steps, you descend the tiny Via Gregoriana half a block until you arrive at the apartment building (a former palazzo) housing the Hotel Suisse. Take the elevator up to the marble-floored landing and approach the ornate wooden doors. You’ve arrived.
Run by the same friendly family for three generations, the Suisse offers 12 classy rooms inside what was once a grand apartment. The original hardwood floors remain, as do restored period details, crown mouldings, and stained glass windows. As you make your way to your room you pass small sitting areas with comfy tables and chairs, and a small bar where you can order a drink.
Guestrooms are quiet and elegant, with paintings and prints hanging on cream walls and an array of antique furnishings. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, a TV, telephone, safe and free Wi-Fi. The rooms overlooking the internal, tree-filled courtyard are likely the quietest, and two rooms have balconies (ask ahead). The private bathrooms are small but spotless and provide a shower (a few bathtubs are available), toiletries, and a hair dryer.
Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in the guest rooms, as there is no common eating area. The nearby Metro Linea A offers good connections to Termini Station, the Vatican and the Colosseum.
The Suisse’s official room rates are in the €120-185 a night range, which is pretty pricey for EuroCheapo. However, like most hotels in the city, rates can drop drastically during slower periods, making it an affordable (and classy) choice. Also note that, as the Suisse is a small property, it sometimes offers a limited number of rooms through our booking partner. If you see “No availability” for your dates, you might want contact the hotel directly to double check.

About the Hotel Suisse neighborhood
Located just south of the Villa Borghese, the Piazza di Spagna is home to the famous Spanish Steps, where hundreds gather to relax in the afternoon sun before strolling along the boutique- and café-lined Via dei Condotti. The area is home to the Trevi Fountain, the lovely Villa Borghese Park, and loads of stylish (and pricey) shops. Hotels in this area tend to be quite expensive.
