The Hotel Drei Kreuz is a 24-room hotel situated in eastern Schallmoos at the foot of Kapuzinerberg. Housed in an outdated building, the Drei Kreuz is surrounded by a hilly area filled with cheap restaurants and bland structures.
Despite this, it gets our vote for family-friendly accoutrements, including kitchenettes and versatile room layouts. The Drei Kreuz is also a good option for those arriving in Salzburg by car, as Vogelweiderstrasse runs right into the autobahn, and hotel parking is free.
The best word to describe the rooms is retro—and we don't mean this in a hip way. The look is more like a well-preserved '70s roadside motel. Ugly carpets, ill-patterned furniture, Formica surfaces (Formica!), and electric candle lights are some of the low points of the décor. But! There's always satellite TV, coffeemaker and en suite bathrooms to save the day.
For traveling families, there are perks: kids get reduced rates. And triples have one double bed in the main quarters and a second, twin-sized bed either portioned off in a cubby-hole-like room or placed in the foyer. Two rooms have kitchenettes. Request ahead.
