The Hotel Astoria literally sits next door to the Chinatown Gate. Its 80 rooms aren’t high on style, but its low rates and super central location make this basic two-star hotel a solid budget pick.
Guestrooms are small and standard. The gilded accents on the utilitarian furnishings give a touch of art-deco feel, but the flourishes end there. Bedspreads and curtains are a standard hotel print. Most rooms look onto busy Bush street, which makes them great for the eyes, but not so pleasant on the ears. Rooms are equipped with a TV, telephone and free Wi-Fi.
Bathrooms are spic-and-span and tiled in gray and white. Some rooms have private bathrooms while the real bargain rooms share.
A continental breakfast is included in the room rate. Parking is also available for $23 a day.

About the Hotel Astoria neighborhood
The heart of San Francisco’s downtown area, Union Square is named for the park that was once the site of pro-Union rallies during the Civil War. These days, it’s a shopper’s paradise, home to department stores, upscale boutiques, tourist shops and salons. Just off the park, you’ll find Chinatown to the north and a cluster of theaters and art galleries to the west. The area is also a transportation and hotel hub.
