Country Hearth Inn

The two-star Country Hearth Inn is one of the many motels that line busy Lombard Street (or, as we like to call it, “motel row,” also known as “Highway 101”). It’s about as basic as you can get, but it has one thing its neighbors on motel row don’t have: Set back from the street and just a block from the lush, Presidio, this baby is quiet!

The 24 rooms here are uninspired, but they’re clean and functional. Utilitarian beds, nightstands and desks come in a light faux-wood, and dark bedspreads with a geometric print match the framed abstract prints that hang above them. An orange accent wall adds a bit of pizazz, and standard amenities apply: air conditioning, TV, telephone, safe, mini-fridge and free Wi-Fi.

Bathrooms are sparkling, with bright white tiles and tub-and-shower combos. Basic toiletries and hair dryers are supplied.

From the outside, the Country Hearth has a bit of a Spanish feel, with its burnt-orange paint job and tiled roof. Its two stories are set around the parking lot, which is free on a first come, first served basis (a big deal for this tough-luck-parking city). The hotel is a simple but solid choice, and during the week it plays home to business types who come in for projects at the Presidio. (As we were leaving, one such regular was checking in and told us he loves the place for its quiet and convenience.)

Located as it is on Lombard Street, the Country Hearth Inn is near a slew of bus lines and within walking distance from the Exploratorium, Fort Mason and the bars, shops and restaurants of the trendy Marina District.
