Now here’s a hotel that lives up to its name—it’s all about good vibrations and good ethos at the cheery, eco-friendly Good Hotel. There is a youthful, almost hostel-esque vibe here, but this modern two-star hotel is no hostel. It’s a property perfectly suited to the artsy, alternative SoMa ‘hood in which it resides, with 117 fun rooms and a philanthropic bent.
The hotel offers 38 motel-style rooms that open onto a small parking lot (hybrid drivers park free!) plus 79 additional rooms inside an adjoining brick building. Rooms gave us an idea of what it would be like if Ikea went environmental. The modular beds are made of reclaimed wood, varnished to a shine, the gray blankets are made from soda bottles and the print throw pillows reuse the hotel’s original bedcovers.
Decoration on the white walls is limited to a cool reversible photography installation and the stenciled mantra “be good” (“good night” also glows in the dark). All rooms are equipped with coffee and tea facilities, a fan, flat-screen TV, iPod dock, telephone and book exchange.
Bathrooms are sleek and modern, with shiny new fixtures and bathtub/shower combos. Toiletries come in shower dispensers to avoid wasting the disposable bottles.
The Good Hotel offers fun extras that make “good” even better. Bright cuckoo clocks mark various time zones above the reclaimed-wood reception desk, and the airy lobby offers a vending machine stocked with sustainable T-shirts. We loved the photo booth that spits out one set for guests to keep and another to tape onto a communal cork board.
A newly opened “wine tavern” serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, with an array of on-tap wines and beers. But perhaps our favorite “good” here is the six Globe bicycles available for free guest use (with a “good-sized” deposit). The hallway is lined with bike and transit maps to aid your adventures.
The Good Hotel is run by the same hotel group as EuroCheapo pick the Best Western Americania, and guests are free to cross the street and take advantage of the Americania’s rooftop pool.
In addition to free Wi-Fi throughout, there is an Internet station in the lobby for a fee.

About the Good Hotel neighborhood
Spunky SoMa sprawls from the Embarcadero to 11th Street. Its name, short for "South of Market," also recalls the days when this area was "South of the Slot," (namely, the "wrong side of cable car the tracks"). The 1990s’ dot com boom ushered in a wave of Internet start-ups and young creatives that cleaned things up, and now SoMa is hip with a downtown edge.
