Set in a historic building within walking distance of Fort Mason and the great shops and eateries of the hip Marina District, the Marina Inn is a two-star hotel with spacious rooms, loads of character and very low rates. Though busy Lombard Street is lined with motels, this cozy gem is a cut above the rest.

The Marina Inn’s 40 spacious rooms have vintage English-country décor that’s busy yet homey. We’re talking pine furniture, floral print wallpaper and plenty of fluffy pillows. All rooms are equipped with a television, phone and free Wi-Fi, and some have bay windows with large window seats. Light sleepers should note, though, that this stretch of Lombard is actually the highway, so ask for an interior room or one facing the much quieter Octavia Street. Bathrooms are small but new and sparkling in tan marble.

The Inn’s building is a classic 1924 hotel, and due to its landmark status, many of the charming historical features are still intact. We loved the pale pink walls and intricate detailing in the hallways, and the lobby with its arched entry and wooden reception counter.

A continental breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in a simple second-floor breakfast room, with pale green walls, a print sofa and small café tables.

The inn has a prime location for catching many buses, and Fort Mason is just two blocks away, with Fisherman’s Wharf and North Beach within walking distance. It’s also just a few blocks to the stretch of Chestnut Street’s fun boutiques and eateries. (We suggest trying Tacolicious for some tasty and affordable “modern Mexican”—and following it up with a sweet all-American morsel from nearby SusieCakes.)
