At the 40-bed Abbes Hostel Gamla Stan, it's not about ambience; it's about proximity: stay here, and the best of Old Town and its magnificent architecture are at your doorstep. The Abbes Gamla Stan offers clean, very, very basic rooms, including 13-person dorms and twin rooms, all with shared facilities. Rooms consist of plain wood bunk beds and the occasional table with chair. Duvets and pillow are included in the price, but you'll have to pay extra for sheets and towels.
Though there's not much going on inside the hostel, which is on the second floor of a stately old building, its quaint cobblestone street is full of bars, boutiques, and darling little restaurants (Thai, Italian, Chinese, etc.). These restaurants are particularly key, as the hostel does not serve breakfast or have a kitchen for guest use.
In addition to several other properties throughout Stockholm, the Abbes has two other hostels on Gamla Stan: the newly renovated Abbes Hostel Royal Palace and the Abbes Hostel Old Town. As there's no reception at the Abbes Gamla Stan, check in at the Old Town, which is a few blocks west, by the water.
