Located around the corner from the Rådmansgatan metro station and the busy Sveavägen boulevard, the four-star Hellsten is a splurge-worthy stunner with unique décor.

Approaching the front desk, we followed a dark corridor lined with African and Asian statues and candles. Per Hellsten, the hotel's owner, collected the art and artifacts throughout his many travels. (A man after our own heart, really.) The hotel prides itself on its international design scheme, which extends to the 78 rooms.

Each of the Hellsten's rooms is filled with a different set of artifacts. The larger rooms have four-poster beds and luxurious furniture, and are out of the average Cheapo's price range. Singles, on the other hand, can be quite reasonable on the weekends.

All rooms have TVs and private bathrooms—adorned with slate sent straight from Greece (naturally). The beds are covered in fluffy duvets. One spacious single is a duplex, with stairs that you climb to get to your bed.

The breakfast room is just above the hotel bar and has a wall of windows and skylights looking out onto a small courtyard. If you visit on a Thursday night, be sure to catch the live jazz in the bar.
