Up one flight of stairs on busy Nybrogatan, Hotel Örnsköld is a gorgeous 27 room hotel, in a classic art nouveau building. While the Örnsköld's standard rooms may be well priced for Stockholm, dear cheapos, for us they're hardly a steal. But we like Örnsköld so much we're awarding it official status as a splurgeworthy hotel.
Why? OK, here goes. Walking up the Örnsköld's unassuming stairway from the street, it's difficult to be prepared for the rich majesty located within. Örnsköld's attention to detail is magnificent. Spacious rooms are antiquey but slick, with metal four-poster beds (often coordinated with chandeliers), stately furniture, and a slew of appealing touches that can't but help to make you feel at home. Despite its small size, Örnsköld is too old-fashioned to count as a slick boutique hotel, and we love it for this.
But wait, there's more! Örnsköld's little budget-happy secret is its slate of tiny rooms, which it calls "cabins." Priced between SEK395 and SEK495, these simple, cute, single-accommodation "cabins" are among the cheapest beds in Stockholm. Denuded of the charms found in the hotel's other rooms, these rooms are nonetheless an excellent no-frills option for single travelers.
And then there's the location, adjacent to the beautiful Kungsträdgården and just minutes from Gamla Stan. It's no surprise that the hotel has tons of return guests.
