The 10-room Hotel Renstierna is fresh and petite with a subtle nautical theme and convenient location in the more business-like section of Sodermalm. Like many budget lodgings, the Renstierna's rooms, all with shared facilities, double as hotel or hostel-style accommodation, depending on supply and demand.
From the front, the hotel looks a bit like a store, but inside it's cheery and pleasant. Peter, the likeable owner, opened the Renstierna more than two years ago and has been working to get it in tip-top shape ever since. As if to illustrate his diligence, Peter was about to run out and fetch a new mattress when we popped in.
All rooms have snug duvets, modern furnishings, cable televisions, and sinks. Beds are either bunks or double-size mattresses—request ahead. As for views, well there aren't any vistas to be had. Rooms face onto the street, the back, or are below ground level. However, the latter have skylights letting in a healthy amount of natural light.
While hostel rates can reach rock bottom (for Stockholm, anyway), we suggest hostellers go with the "all included" option, which means you pay extra but get breakfast, linens, towels, and even a bathrobe. All these amenities are standard if rooms are booked privately or "hotel style."
The Scandi buffet breakfast is served in a cozy grotto-like space on the basement floor, which also has a television with DVD player. Guests have access to the kitchen, including the fridge, sink, stove, and cooking utensils. A vending machine near the lobby dispenses snacks, toiletries, and drinks.
