The Pensionat Oden City offers 17 spacious rooms on the second floor of a large, yellow and gray stone building. The neighborhood, which sits on the border of Norrmalm and Vasastaden, is fairly convenient, close to upscale shopping and Stockholm's business district, though sightseers will have a bit of hike.
The Oden City's furnishings and fabrics are modern and pleasant -- a step above chain hotel fare and lacking that generic feel. Rooms, of which no two are decorated alike, have large windows and high ceilings, giving them an airy feel. Those with shared facilities are a good deal, as they're identical in quality and size to those with toilets and showers en suite. Plus the bathroom-to-room-ratio is good: There are two rooms for every shower-toilet stall. As is the case in most of Stockholm, facilities are clean as a whistle with new fixtures and an overall fresh feel.
The Oden City is the newest of the Pensionat Oden trio of guesthouses, which includes the Pensionat Oden Sodermalm and the Pensionat Oden Vasastan. The City's rates are a bit more than its sibling properties due to its convenient-for-businesspeople location. Limited reception hours mean that guests have a code to get into the door. At least there's an elevator to the second floor entrance. Breakfast, which is included, is continental.
NOTE: If, for some reason, you find yourself in Sweden alongside a furry friend, the Oden City welcomes canine companions. Two of the owner's big, sweet dogs were hanging out at the reception during our visit, and one even came along for the tour.
