The 22-room Pensionat Oden Södermalm offers pleasant and roomy accommodation on a wide mixed business-residential street just west of Sodermalm's main hub and about a block or so from the Mariatorget T-bana station. Situated on the second story, it shares a rather nondescript, modern building with shops on the ground floor and residences above.
The friendly Ioan, whose brother manages the joint, greeted us at the reception and gave us a thorough tour. Rooms, which are on the spacious side, are individually decorated with 19th-century inspired furnishings and fabrics. All have wood floors, a writing desk with chair, and pleasant lighting. Some of the larger "family" rooms have a small couch and coffee table. Guests can rent refrigerators and safes for a daily fee. Only nine of the rooms have private bathrooms: the remaining 13 share tidy facilities in the halls.
As reception is limited, guests need a code to get into the building and to access the front door of the pension. Breakfast, which is included, is served in a small breakfast room, and guests have access to the kitchen for their own use. The same owners also run the Pensionat Oden Norrmalm and the Pensionat Oden City in Vasastan.
NOTE: The Pensionat Oden plans to change its name to the Pensionat Gamla Stan, though it's neither in, nor particularly close to, Gamla Stan. The reasoning—people recognize the name "Gamla Stan," and they don't know squat about Sodermalm. We think that's just plain silly, not to mention confusing—particularly since "Soder," as the locals call it, is such a fab place to stay.
