Rex Hotel is a family-run boutique hotel with a price range that falls into splurgey EuroCheapo territory on weekends only. (The rest of the week it's beyond a splurge.) The Rex's lobby is characterized by tropical plants and teak wood furniture, both of which provide a nice balance to its otherwise familiar Scandinavian crispness.
Photographer Per Hellsten, the gregarious owner of Rex and the brand new four-star Hotel Hellsten across the street, often hangs around the hotel. During our visit he was testing the fire alarm system.
The Rex occupies a renovated 1860s townhouse. Brick-walled hallways yield to modern, warm, bright rooms. The little touches are the most impressive. Owner Hellsten's framed photos grace Rex's halls and hotel rooms. Bathrooms are outfitted in slate sourced from Greece; toiletries are particularly swank. Rex is that rare Stockholm beast, a well-outfitted boutique hotel with weekend prices within our range.
The Vasastaden location is surrounded by television studios, publishing houses, and other new media creative offices. It's close to the metro and an easy stroll to Drottninggatan and the city center. Clientele consists of business travelers during the week and hipster tourists on the weekends.
