The massive 327-room Scandic Malmen sits on bustling Gotgatan in central Södermalm, just where the hip stores end and the fast food chains come in. The Malmen belongs to the Swedish Scandic chain, which has dozens of hotels in Stockholm, as well as properties in Copenhagen, Oslo, and other parts of Europe.
Oddly enough, the chain seems to be most famous for its breakfast buffets, at least according to several of our local sources. "There are a 100 things on the buffet," said one enthusiastic Swedish friend. "Including many different types of herring." Well, we're sole-d!
Food aside, the Scandic Malmen is a safe and comfortable bet. You won't get old world architecture or individually decorated rooms, but you will get a pleasant, nicely sized room with simple though cheerful decor. IKEA-like furniture is matched with tasteful, burgundy bedding and leaf-patterned curtains, which, incidentally, would look very nice as a shower curtains. Brushed metal light fixtures are strategically placed throughout the room, and the wood floors are squeaky clean.
At the Malmen, amenities are in the bag: from en suite bathrooms to wireless Internet access and a full service restaurant, it's all in the building. The staff is super-friendly and efficient. And, of course, the famed breakfast is included in the price.
