This hotel isn'’t kidding with its "one minute from San Marco" jive. The main piazza is just around two corners. A modest 13-room, family-run pension, the Albergo Doni resides in an early 19th-century building, with narrow hallways and creaky floors to boot.
Rooms are small, yet functional, with enough brocade and oriental carpets to counterbalance the scattered Formica furnishings and carnival posters. Bathrooms are spacious and clean, if not a bit shabby. Subtle shabbiness aside, some rooms are prettier than others, offering original woodwork and canal views.
And, heck, 200 years are bound to show sooner or later. The family has been in the business since 1946. Someone’s granny’s hand-knit lace curtains and scattered family portraits about the place, which give the Doni a homey feel.
Hit up brother and sister team Nikos and Tessa for city tips and directions. Aunt Gina actually lives here (you’ll notice her padding about in slippers) and she may even grab you something from the kitchen if you ask nicely.
You will be asked to keep your shenanigans outside as well. This is a quiet, rather couple-y place, so down your last beer somewhere else in San Marco before heading home.
Rooms with canal views are available. Request ahead. |
