The bare-bones Alloggi Gerotto Calderan is situated on the busy Campo San Geremia, within easy walking distance of the train station. It’s a bargain-rate guesthouse with basic décor, few amenities and a variety of room types. But hey, in a city of expensive hotels, the Calderan is a welcome find for Cheapos.
Pros: Location near train station. AC. Friendly staff. Some nice views.
Cons: Quite basic. No elevator. Can get noisy. Curfew (1 a.m.). Cash only.
The hotel’s entryway and hallways struck us as a bit tattered, although the Calderan’s 30 simple rooms were in much better shape, with air conditioning and simple white walls. Shiny porcelain floors and a few Venetian touches add a little class where you'd least expect it.
In addition to singles, doubles, triples and quads, the Calderan offers six-bed dorms (for ages 35 and under) with very few frills. There are no lockers available in the dorm rooms, although there is a safe at reception. It should also be noted that there is only one key per dorm room, which can make it awkward for guests arriving or returning at odd hours. Bed linens are included for all guest rooms (dorms and privates).
The few scattered balconies are original to the building and offer great views, although any of the 17 rooms facing the Campo will have views—and be a bit noisy at night. Quieter rooms face a garden or courtyard.
Dorms at the Alloggi Gerotto Calderan share bathrooms, and some double rooms do as well. The rest of the doubles, and all other room types, feature private bathrooms. Either way, bathrooms are straightforward affairs with showers. Towels are included for all private rooms, but not for dorm guests.
The same management runs the Hotel San Geremia next door, which serves as the reception for both hotels.
Wi-Fi is free throughout (but can be patchy). Note that the hotel doesn’t have an elevator, and some rooms are located on the fourth floor. Also, note the 1 a.m. curfew, and the hotel accepts cash only and requires payment in full upon arrival. Breakfast is not served. But hey, this place is cheap!

About the Alloggi Gerotto Calderan neighborhood
Situated north and west of the train station, Cannaregio provides some of the city's cheapest sleeps and eats. It's the most navigable "sestiere" in the city and by far the most convenient area from which to explore Venice. Adjacent to the train station on one end and bordering San Marco at the Rialto Bridge on the other, here you’ll find the Jewish Ghetto and some of Venice’s finest palaces, among them the breathtaking Ca d’ Oro.
