The Hotel Minerva & Nettuno is a simple one-star option, offering rooms with and without private bath along the touristy Rio Terà Lista di Spagna, just minutes from the train station.
Pros: Cheap rooms. Very close to the train station.
Cons: Can pick up street noise. No air conditioning in the cheapest rooms. No elevator.
The 30 rooms at the Hotel Minerva e Nettuno fall into two categories: super cheapo (shared bath) and kind of cheapo (with private bath). Those with shared bath are furnished with basic wooden furniture, linoleum floors, a sink and a fan (no air conditioning). One of these rooms on the top floors has its own private “terrace,” albeit rather low-key (see photo).
Rooms with private bath are obviously more expensive, and are dressed up a bit, with paintings, some Murano-glass lamps, and prettier furniture (even if they still seem dated). More importantly, these are equipped with air conditioning, a safe, satellite TV and telephone.
Things get fancier in the annex across the street, where rooms feature wood-beamed ceilings and Venetian-style furnishings. These rooms run for about €130 per double in high season (which is not off the Cheapo charts for that time of year).
All in all, we think that the Minerva and Nettuno could work for unfussy budget travelers, especially those who are looking for quick access to the train station.
A breakfast buffet is included in the room rate. Wi-Fi is available (although you may have to pay for it—when we visited they were offering three hours for free). The hotel does not have an elevator.

About the Hotel Minerva e Nettuno neighborhood
Situated north and west of the train station, Cannaregio provides some of the city's cheapest sleeps and eats. It's the most navigable "sestiere" in the city and by far the most convenient area from which to explore Venice. Adjacent to the train station on one end and bordering San Marco at the Rialto Bridge on the other, here you’ll find the Jewish Ghetto and some of Venice’s finest palaces, among them the breathtaking Ca d’ Oro.
