Located on a stylish strip just off the Campo San Stefano and near the Accademia Bridge, the Locanda Art Deco is a darling of a guesthouse that, unfortunately for cheapos, has gotten more expensive in recent the years. However, if it fits your budget, it’s worth considering.
Pros: Excellent location. Cool Deco style.
Cons: No elevator. Often expensive.
Unlike many of the hotels in our guide, the Art Deco’s building was constructed during the Belle Époque of only one (rather than five) century ago. Thus, you’ll find fanciful wrought-iron banisters, early 20th-century furnishings, and cool Deco touches throughout.
This theme carries on into the locanda’s six guest rooms, which have some lovely antique beds and armoires, along with sheer curtains and cream walls. All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, phone and computer—just ask for a keyboard upon check-in. The reception also lends out DVDs of Venice-related films to help you get in the mood.
The cool-colored private bathrooms are clean and fabulously stylish. They offer a hairdryer and toiletries.
We spent three nights in a romantic, “tree-house”-inspired room at the tip-top of the hotel, with skylights and a sloped ceiling. While it’s not for everyone (there’s a climb, for starters), we were charmed.
The Locanda is also associated with the three-room B&B Art Deco across the street, which serves as its annex. Reception and breakfast for both are located in the Locanda Art Deco.
A continental breakfast buffet is included in the room rate. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator.
Value note: As with many hotels in Venice, the Locanda's rates swing somewhat wildly, in this case from €80-200 a night. Is it a good deal? It is on the lower end of that spectrum, but we'd look elsewhere when it gets too pricey.

About the Locanda Art Deco neighborhood
Located to the east of the Grand Canal, the San Marco neighborhood is the city's commercial, tourist and religious core. The magnificent Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) and Saint Mark's Basilica rightfully attract wandering tourists (and hungry pigeons) like a magnet. The area around the glorious Rialto Bridge on the north side of the district is a beautiful, bustling mess.
