Pension Franz isn't a secret anymore. In fact, it is exactly the type of hotel that travel writers love to herald. Nonetheless, it still feels like a discovery.
Shabby chic and gilt interiors paired with a choice location in the student quarter of Alsergrund give Franz the feel of a classic down at heel property, and in fact, with its three stars, it actually lacks some of the amenties we'd want at this price point. Near the university and the U-Bahn, the location is ideal for visitors on a budget. Scads of cheap food options, the Rathaus, and Sigmund Freud park are all nearby.
The hotel is dripping with period detail. Paintings of languorous Viennese ladies hang in the rooms, which are all odd shapes and angles. Glittery chandeliers and lamps sparkle, and common areas are draped in oriental carpets and wood. Even the wallpaper contains gold lead filigree.
Some of the generously sized rooms boast windows looking out on the Votive Church. Unfortunately, all the period detail leaves little room for perks like Internet access, though rooms do have minibars and cable televisions.
Service is classically Viennese, and is accordingly best for visitors who appreciate a hands-off experience.
