Situated inside a Neo-Gothic castle next to Zurich’s main train station, the Swiss National Museum is a mammoth place and well worth a visit. The complex is comprised of three museums, including the National Museum of Zurich, the Castle of Prangins and the Forum of Swiss History.
The museum, which opened in 1897, boasts a collection to match its size and stature. The museum aims to provide a history of Swiss culture and life through a dizzying array of Swiss artifacts, amassed art and objects.
Highlights include archaeology exhibits, pre-Reformation church art, military items (like armor and weaponry) and gold artifacts. In other words, expect to find anything that showcases Swiss development in the arenas of politics, religion, art and economics.
