Cheap hotels near Zoological Gardens in Zurich, Switzerland
Home to more than 300 species, Zurich’s Zoological Gardens draws quite a crowd. Sure, its slightly far-flung location may not be convenient, but once you’re there, you’ll find it was well worth the trip.
A few of the main attractions? Check out the bat conservation area, the Masoala rainforest exhibit, the zoo’s Galapagos giant turtles and the European otters. Bonus: You might even spot some baby otters, as the zoo is now involved in a breeding program to help the native European otter population flourish.
If you visit the zoo when temperatures climb above 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees F), you can take in the Penguin Parade, in which a bunch of little poppers strut their stuff through the main zoo path. It takes place daily at noon.
The zoo, which is part of the University of Zurich’s zoological school, is open 365 days a year. From March to October, gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.; November to February hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours on some Saturdays throughout the year. Ticket prices vary. See the zoo’s Web site for more details. Tram #5, which runs from the Bahnhofstrasse, goes directly to its front gates.
Hotels near the Zurich Zoo: Most of the budget hotels that we recommend in Zurich are located a bit closer to the city's center. We do recommend one youth hostel somewhat nearby.
