The comfortable three-star Hotel Achillion offers tastefully-decorated rooms without tastefully-decorated room rates—it's a win-win combination. So what's the caveat? Well, the Achillion is near Omonia Square, in one of the least-attractive parts of central Athens. Luckily, it's quite an easy walk or metro ride to some of Athens' more inviting areas.

Nikos and the other folks who run the 63-room Achillion have created a friendly, warm, and peaceful atmosphere. Bedrooms, all with bathrooms en suite, are decorated in a simple, relaxed style with dark wood furniture and pleasing color palettes: some rooms are decorated in cool, calming blue hues, while others boast warm, rich oranges and browns.

Recently renovated the Achillion is equipped with many modern amenities, including sound-proofed, double-paned windows, air conditioning, telephones, and satellite TV. And every room has a mini-fridge.

All bathrooms are lined with gold-accented tiles and shimmering shower curtains. Some have bathtubs; others have showers. If you have a preference, be sure to state it when making your reservation—which, by the way, you can do in Greek, English, French, or Italian.

Breakfast is included. Wired Internet is free throughout the hotel.

A gritty transit and commercial hub, Omonia Square is not Athens at its most quaint and ancient. In architectural terms, it is is other than charming. But there are plenty of quirky, even inspiring, aspects of the area around Omonia Square. For one, oodles of ethnic restaurants and immigrant retail shops give the area a bit of an international vibe.

There's also the mindblowing Central Market, featuring stall upon stall of interesting goods. While Omonia is convenient for cheap sleeps and international fare, keep in mind the area can get a bit sketchy at night.
