The Buzz on Biarritz

Ahh, those Atlantic breezes... Photo: Pablo Sanxiao

For several years now we’ve been hearing a buzz about the rediscovery of Biarritz, the Atlantic coast beach resort town in the southwestern corner of France.

Part of what makes Biarritz so interesting is its history as a tourist spot. Once Napoleon’s holiday destination of choice, Biarritz long ago lost its preeminence as a French beach resort to various Côte d’Azur hotspots. Despite this, it still lures huge numbers of visitors to its upmarket hotels and beaches.

Today, Biarritz is as much a site of faded glamour as it is a huge surfer destination. Among the local surf-oriented establishments, we like the looks of the Natural Surf Lodge, which is located 35km from Biarritz.

We just discovered that Sterling is following fellow low-fare airline Ryanair in flying to the Basque surf town. As of May, Sterling will be jetting from Copenhagen and Oslo to Biarritz. Fares start at €72 one-way from Oslo and €74 one-way from Copenhagen, taxes and fees included.
