Don't be fooled by the Safestay's humble exterior. The two-star hotel and hostel, formerly known as the Hotel Opera, offers rooms just a few blocks north of the Grand Place, at reasonable rates and with plenty of comforts.

Rooms are in need of a “revival” and are outfitted with basic curtains, white bedspreads and patterned carpets—as well as small cable TVs and free Wi-Fi. A tiny (trust us) elevator will take you to all floors. Bathrooms are basic and all have showers. Some rooms have private bathrooms, while dorms share bathrooms.

The lobby is a bit small but has a comfy seating area.

Guests can enjoy a buffet breakfast in the breakfast room for an additional charge, or a continental breakfast can be delivered to guests’ rooms for free.

Primarily a hostel and offering long-term accommodations, Safestay Brussels also features communal activities, like daily meetups, pizza parties, game nights, and walking tours.

Grand Place

Grote Markt, Grand Place, or whatever you want to call it, this impressive square facing the medieval Town Hall (built in 1402), is the undisputed tourist epicenter of Brussels. The surrounding neighborhood—sprinkled with hotels, cutesy cafés, restaurants and chocolate shops—draws throngs of shutter-happy tourists day after day.

A maze of cobblestoned alleys radiating from the square leads to the opera house, a commercial drag or the gay district, depending on which turn you take. Ornate guild houses, sidewalk cafés and souvenir shops crowd the neighborhood, making it a lively place around the clock.
