The three-star Hotel Cimabue offers peaceful and elegant accommodations in a quiet residential area north of the tourist center not far from the University of Florence. The Cimabue’s 21 rooms come with reasonable rates and private bathrooms.

Rooms have intricate iron or antique wooden beds. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs. Pink-and-white tiled bathrooms feature chrome fixtures and box showers, with a few bathtubs available.

Since first-floor rooms have low ceilings and don’t get much light, we recommend requesting one of the light-filled 2nd floor rooms, which feature higher ceilings and original 19th-century frescoes. There are also several family-friendly rooms and some connected doubles.

The breakfast room has café-style seating and a shiny white coffee bar. Breakfast is included.

San Marco

North of the Duomo, and home to the Accademia Gallery and David, parts of this area are flooded with tourists and tourist cuisine. As you head north, however, the streets widen out a bit, and there's a much more residential feel to the area.

Florence's university is also located nearby, which explains the few hipster-inspired bars, shops and restaurants dotting the 'hood. You're most likely to find peace and quiet in the northern part of San Marco.

Choosing a hotel in San Marco makes sense if you're looking for a quieter, more peaceful (and less touristy) sleeping experience. You might have to walk 10-15 minutes to get to the center of town, but you might find that the walk is worth it.
