Hotel Bernina Geneva

Facing the train station, the Hotel Bernina is a traditional three-star spot that has managed to stay in the accommodation business since 1860. Its 77 rooms, which have been recently updated, are bright and clean, and its convenient location is hard to beat.

The stately “Fazy-era” (radical leader James Fazy played a major role in shaping the city during the mid-19th century) building, a style typical of upscale lakeside properties on Geneva’s left bank, promises a classy experience. But the dark, narrow entry next to a pizzeria is less than impressive. Likewise, funky yellow chairs in the lobby hint at retro-chic interiors, while rooms are simple yet updated with industrial designs on the walls.

The rooms are simply appointed with standard wooden furniture and some midcentury-inspired chairs. A telephone, safe and cable TV round out the amenities. Bathrooms really shine, with new marble tiling and artsy wood stools for a spa-like feel.

While the renovated rooms and en suites are great, what really takes this hotel over the top is the friendliness of its young staff. And the convenience of its location—just a few steps away from the station in the heart of the city—should be reiterated.

If you can get an off-season or weekend deal, Hotel Bernina could be a convenient and affordable base. But if you have to pay the full price, we recommend looking elsewhere—you can get more for your money, even in Geneva.
