The three-star Hotel Wallis offers comfortable rooms a few blocks south of the station, very close to the Old City “Ring”. The location, along busy Schwanthalerstrasse, makes it a convenient, if busy, home base.

From the street, the three-star Hotel Wallis looks like a throw-back to the 1970s, with a somewhat brutal facade and the mid-century font to go with it. Inside, however, things are a bit more up to date, with a gold-and-marble lobby and six floors of rooms that are either renovated or unrenovated.

The more expensive renovated rooms sport a trendier decor, with striped carpets, modern furnishings, giant wooden headboards, and nice blue-tiled baths (not to mention a Nespresso machine). Unrenovated rooms have more typical (and snoozy) desks, tables and beds. All bathrooms have a combination shower/tub.

Rooms facing the street will be brighter, but they do pick up some noise--light sleepers should absolutely ask for one of the rooms facing the back courtyard. (Extra bonus: All rooms facing the back have a small balcony, as well!)

A large, splurge-worthy breakfast buffet (with salmon, shrimp and sparkling wine) is available for an additional fee.

South of the Train Station

The blocks south of the Hauptbahnhof, or main train station, feature a staggering number of hotels. Many of Munich's sex shops can also be found here, as well as a dizzying range of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés. Far to the south, this area morphs into a genteel commercial district speckled with green boulevards and quiet side streets. The hotel-heavy part of the area is conveniently located next to Stadtmitte and very well served by public transportation nonetheless, allowing for easy escapes from the hectic tourist-oriented atmosphere.
