Fancy waking up in an historic Bavarian mansion? The family-run Hotel Uhland offers just that, with 25 spacious guestrooms in a classy 19th-century mansion that’s located on a side street lined with historic buildings and striking foliage.

Bright hallways, wide stairs and a retro elevator lead visitors to the spacious guestrooms, all with high ceilings, old lamps and recently renovated designs that are pleasant, not pretentious. All rooms are equipped with flat-screen TV, minibar and safe, and some rooms with private balconies.

All rooms have their own private bath, all but one of which has a shower (one bathtub available).

We found the family and staff that run the Uhland (including their "hotel watchdog") to be quite friendly and warm. The hotel’s lobby, breakfast room (where the included buffet breakfast is served), and lounge are contemporary, yet comfortable.

The hotel’s Uhlandstrasse location is a pleasant 15-minute walk south from Central Station, and is just one block from the Oktoberfest fairgrounds.

One more excellent and unusual perk: The Uhland provides free parking in the back.

South of the Train Station

The blocks south of the Hauptbahnhof, or main train station, feature a staggering number of hotels. Many of Munich's sex shops can also be found here, as well as a dizzying range of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés. Far to the south, this area morphs into a genteel commercial district speckled with green boulevards and quiet side streets. The hotel-heavy part of the area is conveniently located next to Stadtmitte and very well served by public transportation nonetheless, allowing for easy escapes from the hectic tourist-oriented atmosphere.
