We’re with you, Paris

In these difficult moments, we send our thoughts and well wishes to the people of France as they recover from last Friday’s tragic events in Paris.

There truly is no other city like Paris. Spend a day guided by your whims, wandering its streets–you’re sure to experience a remarkable mix of sights, smells and sounds, many of which have hardly changed in a century. You’ll pass museums that contain world-class treasures, corner patisseries with lines out the door, and café tables arranged neatly and occupied by locals (and a few tourists trying it all out).

It’s no surprise that Paris is the most popular tourist destination in the world. And even when we’re not physically there, many of us still surround ourselves with the city. Its art, architecture and influence sit on our bookshelves and hang in our hallways. It’s a special relationship.

Today, we’re all struggling to make sense of last weekend’s violent acts. In these difficult moments, our thoughts are with the Parisians whose lives have been shaken and changed.

Some readers may understandably be conflicted about whether or not to alter their travel plans in light of these events. We remember these same quandaries in the months following 9/11, and even, much more recently, the period following the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris earlier this year.

We believe, however, that in these moments, travel can be especially powerful. Travel shows support by giving business to struggling hotels and restaurants, adding strength to the local economy. But through human contact, it also helps dispel fears, as travelers encounter the people of the city reestablishing normalcy.

Visiting in the coming months is a statement of strength, and a chance to stand up against the forces of fear. Every visitor in the streets, every conversation started, every crêpe ordered — they’re all part of the solution.

We’re with you, Paris. We can’t wait to see you again soon. À bientôt!

  1. This is a touching article, Tom; an exceedingly well written one and a powerful statement that appeals to reason and common sense, to sentiment, to profound solidarity and to an unrequited love for Paris. Thanks !
