Situated across the river in Oltrarno, the lovely and romantic Piazza Santo Spirito is a peaceful home to the Church of Santo Spirito. The church, which dates from 1436, is one of the great examples of Renaissance architecture in Florence.

The square itself dates to the 13th-century when it was razed with the idea that it could serve as a platform for Augustinian monks who had started to preach publicly and were amassing crowds.

Today the square hosts daily outdoor markets and fairs (offering both clothing and food). The piazza is lined with restaurants, cafes, nightclubs and shops, most of which get busier at night. In addition, the area tends to attract artists, whose lofts are in the area.

At night, young Florentines flock to the square, hang out on the church steps, and relax (sometimes with a beer bottle in hand).
