Sitting atop one of the highest points in Florence, the church of San Miniato al Monte is a staggering Romanesque structure that seems to overlook all of Tuscany. Out front, there’s an adjoining monastery and an on-site cemetery replete with sculptures, monuments and tombs of prominent Florentine citizens.

The crypt downstairs is the oldest part of the church and contains the relics of Saint Miniato, a Christian martyr who, according to legend, survived his execution under Emperor Decius (circa 250 A.D.).

To visit the church from central Florence, you’ll first have to cross the Arno into Oltrarno, and then climb, climb, climb the steps to the church. In addition to the peaceful church visit, the gorgeous views and photo opportunities are well worth the climb!
