Located on terribly cute Kensington Gardens Square, the two-star Kensington Gardens Hotel sports chain-hotel-style rooms with a touch of style.

The 17 small guest rooms at the Kensington Gardens Hotel are pretty straightforward. Bed frames are gray-tone wood, and work desks are very Ethan Allen. Is it charming? Not particularly. Does it do the trick? Yes, and at rates that are reasonable for the neighborhood.

All rooms are equipped with coffee and tea facilities and a TV.

Thirteen rooms have private bathrooms while four singles share facilities. The bathrooms are relatively good-sized, given the compact rooms. They are clean and tiled, some with bathtubs (ask ahead).

There is no elevator here, and the stairs are steep. On the indisputable plus side, the Kensington Gardens Hotel enjoys a fabulous location in tony Bayswater and is a four-minute walk from the Bayswater Tube station.

Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (ask ahead) and is served in a breakfast room next door to the hotel.

This mostly residential area, situated north of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens, is packed with affordable, often nondescript, places to sleep. Expensive apartments sit next to budget inns. Many less expensive inns line the lovely gardens and squares of Bayswater's posher, western edge. Bayswater makes a smart choice for visitors looking for a quiet neighborhood for sleeping within easy access of the city’s main sights.
