Situated just north of the Louvre in Paris’ 1st arrondissement, the Palais-Royal is a 17th-century sight to behold, with extensive gardens that make a great spot to relax in the center of the city.
The royal palace opened in 1633 and is marked by a series of columns and arcades. Today you’ll find lots of fascinating outdoor sculptures, chestnut trees and several fountains here.
In its earliest days, the Palais Royal was called “Palais Cardinal” and served as the residence of Cardinal Richelieu. Later, Louis XIV (the “Sun King”) spent his youth here before moving to the Louvre Palace and then to Versailles.
Currently, the building houses France’s Constitutional Council and the Ministry of Culture. To the rear of the palace, you can find the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the national library which holds more than 14 million books and manuscripts!
Admission to the gardens of the Palais-Royal is free of charge. You can visit daily from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
