This two-star hotel features a helpful proprietor, modern rooms and a good location near Termini Station. Plus, with an affordable buffet breakfast, a memorable old-world elevator and low rates, it all adds up to a lovely budget experience.

Located on the fifth floor of an apartment building near Termini Station, the two-star Hotel Ercoli is accessible by a glamorous, old-fashioned elevator that conjures up images of classic films. Look out for the owner’s daughter Marta, who runs around helping guests with everything from booking tours or airport transfers to offering shopping tips. (“Ask Marta” is even the Hotel Ercoli’s motto.) The family-run hotel is located near public transportation connections to the historic center and the Vatican.

The Hotel Ercoli’s 14 guest rooms can be on the small side, but they are comfortable and modern. Standard amenities, including air conditioning, a flat-screen TV, and telephone, make the rooms feel more like home.

The white-tiled, private bathrooms are equipped with toiletries and a hair dryer.

The morning meal, available for a small extra fee, is served in the large, cheery breakfast room.

The hotel has complimentary Wi-Fi.

In its defense, the area north of Stazione Centrale Termini is both convenient and affordable. On the convenience front, trains heading to Fumincino airport and across Italy depart from this massive structure. The front of Termini is a tangle of bus stops, and Rome's two metro lines, as well as markets and shops.

That said, the area north of Termini is not the most picturesque area in central Rome by a long shot. The semi-circle of streets north of the station is bordered by the Piazza della Republica to the west and the Villa Borghese parkland to the north. In between are hundreds of hotels and very few tourist attractions. Although always crowded and sometimes a little seedy, there is an upside to this neighborhood. Lots of competition in every hotel budget category can make for good rates.
