Locanda Silva

The Locanda Silva is a friendly, family-run hotel situated near San Marco that offers clean and simple rooms, with or without private bath. The canal-side location is a big plus, and original artwork adds a touch of flair.

Although the building dates from the 17th century, the hotel’s interior is surprisingly mid-century modern and feels bright and airy. After days of “Venetian” décor, the Silva’s 20th-century design struck us as refreshingly straightforward and clean. As you climb the stairs to the reception, you’ll pass modern canvases painted by local artist Franco Castelli (who just happens to be married to Sandra, the Silva’s proprietor).

Upstairs, most of the Locanda Silva’s 23 guest rooms are simple and modern, with straightforward wooden beds, tables and chairs. Room décor is limited to brightly painted walls hung with the occasional print. Six of the rooms overlook a quiet canal. All rooms are equipped with air conditioning and a phone. Wi-Fi is free and works throughout the hotel.

Three rooms are dressed up with Venetian murals, white wooden floors, and swanky new bathrooms.

All but six of the rooms have private bathrooms, most of which are period pieces in themselves: 1970s-era green tile and Formica, outfitted with a shower and hairdryer. They’re dated but in great shape. The six rooms without facilities are cheaper, have their own sinks and share spotless baths in the hallway (three rooms share each bathroom, per floor).

Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in a sunny room overlooking a canal that features more of the family’s modern art pieces. Two outdoor terraces are open to guests. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator.
